As part of its 60th anniversary initiatives, JTB Hawaii donated and installed approximately 30 state-of-the-art trash bins around Kuhio Beach in 2024. This initiative has contributed to maintaining Waikiki’s scenic beauty and improving sanitation, helping to create a more comfortable environment for both visitors and local residents.
Building on the success of this effort, the City and County of Honolulu has decided to expand the installation using public funding. JTB Hawaii continues to support the project through additional contributions. Currently, new trash bins are being installed primarily along Kalakaua Avenue and Kuhio Avenue.
The newly installed bins feature a sealed, durable, and weather-resistant design, expected to prevent litter dispersion and discourage unauthorized scavenging. These features contribute to enhancing both cleanliness and safety in public spaces.
According to WBID, the homeless population in key areas—including Kalakaua Avenue, Kuhio Avenue, and Kuhio Beach—has significantly decreased in recent years, with a reduction of over 80% confirmed. Environmental improvement initiatives, including the installation of trash bins, are considered to have contributed to these positive changes in the community.
Upon completion of the project, a total of 100 trash bins will be installed across Waikiki.
JTB Hawaii remains committed to contributing to the local community and environmental conservation, and will continue to support the development of a sustainable tourism destination through public-private partnerships.
