With 40 years of experience, Travel Plaza Transportation provides new COVID-19 prevention measures

The global COVID-19 virus pandemic has massively changed the public awareness of the three conditions that facilitate the transmission of infection (closed spaces, crowds, and close contact). This is especially true to visitors traveling to Hawaii, as they use buses as their main mode of transportation and we certainly understand the concerns of our customers.

At Travel Plaza Transportation (TPT), we are taking measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus so that our customers can use our buses with peace of mind. We would like to introduce the specific details of our prevention efforts.

Of the 26 large buses owned by TPT, 23 of them use the German Daimler (formerly Daimler-Benz) brand “Setra”, all of which are equipped with a “Roof-mounted Aquasphere Air System”. The system provides clean air by constantly circulating air while driving with an aquatic air conditioning system with an anti-viral functional layer air filter. Since fresh air can be provided to the inside of the car without opening the window, the air is completely exchanged every two to four minutes. To draw a comparison: the amount of air moved every hour is equivalent to that in 35 detached homes. Overall, this means the passenger receives a much greater proportion of fresh air. In addition, we ventilate the bus not only when driving, but also when parking as much as possible.

This video shows how efficiently constant air exchange via the air conditioning system works.

At TPT, we have also taken the following measures to prevent the spread of infections, thus creating an atmosphere of health and well-being on board.

  • Wearing masks
The crew and reception staff will wear masks so that customers can board with peace of mind.
  • Crew physical condition check
Before leaving the bus depot, all crew are enforced to wash their hands, have a body temperature check, and check their state of health.
  • Installation of hand sanitizer for customers
A hand sanitizer is installed at the bus entrance, and we ask customers to disinfect their hands when boarding on and off the bus.
  • Interior cleaning
In addition to normal cleaning, we regularly disinfect areas that customers touch the most (handrails, armrests, etc.).
  • Installation of a sign board inside the bus
A sign board is installed inside the bus to call for COVID-19 preventive measures.
  • Limitation on the number of passengers
We have set an upper limit of 70% of the total number of seats, and ask passengers not to sit side-by-side other than family/household members.
  • Prevention of infection through crew
Acrylic board or vinyl sheet is installed in the driver’s seat area. Also, the front seats are prohibited from use.
