JTB Hawaii Group* (hereinafter referred to as “JTB Hawaii”) is working with the City and County of Honolulu and the Waikīkī Business Improvement District (WBID) to promote a waste bin installation project aimed at improving the environment in Waikiki.

As a tourism business, JTB Hawaii leverages its longstanding local network and works closely with government agencies and community organizations to create a more sustainable destination where both visitors and local residents can enjoy a clean and comfortable environment.

Developing Infrastructure to Support a Sustainable Tourism Destination

This initiative began in 2024 as part of JTB Hawaii’s 60th anniversary activities, when approximately 30 new waste bins were donated and installed around Kuhio Beach.

As the number of visitors to Waikiki increased, waste became a growing community concern. Open-top waste bins had contributed to litter around the streets and beaches, as well as the risk of marine pollution. The new waste bins feature secure lids to help prevent litter from spilling out, a design that complements Hawaii’s natural surroundings, and a durable fixed installation system designed to improve the cleanliness, safety, and appearance of the area.

In June 2026, the City and County of Honolulu began expanding the initiative using public funding, with approximately 100 new waste bins being installed throughout Waikiki.

According to WBID, environmental improvement initiatives, including the installation of waste bins, have contributed to an improvement in the local environment, with the homeless population in key areas of Waikiki reportedly decreasing by more than 80%.

JTB Hawaii will continue to go beyond the traditional role of a tourism business by contributing to sustainable destination development and the revitalization of local communities.
